Why Mount Vernon Calls Us for Sewage Backups
Sewage cleanup is not a do-it-yourself job. Exposure can cause gastrointestinal illness and infections, and improper cleanup leaves contamination behind in materials you can't see into.
Proper PPE & Biohazard Protocols
Contractors wear respirators, eye protection, nitrile gloves, and protective suits, and set up containment to keep contamination out of clean areas. It keeps contamination from spreading to unaffected rooms.
Licensed & Insured Independent Pros
The network includes licensed and insured independent biohazard and sewage cleanup pros. Confirm credentials directly before work begins.
Clear Pricing Before Work
Removal, sanitizing, and drying are quoted in writing. The estimate includes disposal of contaminated waste.
Rapid Local Response

Sewage Backup Cleanup Solutions
Sewage cleanup follows a strict sequence.
Area Isolation
Containment walls and air scrubbers isolate the affected area. Foot traffic is limited to protect clean rooms.
Sewage Extraction & Material Removal
After extraction, contaminated porous materials are cut out, bagged, and hauled off. Porous items can't be made safe after sewage contact.
Cleaning & Disinfection
Hard surfaces and framing are scrubbed and treated with EPA-registered disinfectants. ATP testing can confirm surfaces are clean.
Deodorization & Air Scrubbing
HEPA air scrubbers and deodorization treatments remove lingering odor after cleanup. Masking odor without removing the source never works.
Drain Line & Backflow Assessment
Backups often come from main line clogs, tree roots, grease buildup, or municipal sewer surcharges. A sewer camera pinpoints the problem, and a backwater valve guards against recurrence.

When the Drain Backed Up
Nobody wants to make this call, but these callers were glad they did.
Roots clogged the main and sewage backed up into the basement shower. The crew sealed off the basement, pulled the carpet and drywall, and disinfected everything. You couldn't smell a thing after.
— Alan G., Mount VernonI almost tried to handle it myself with bleach. The contractor explained why the drywall had to go and why bleach wasn't enough.
— Samantha K., Mount VernonThe city sewer backed up into three houses on our street during a storm. They had our basement sanitized and recommended a backwater valve so it doesn't happen again.
— Henry L., Mount VernonSewage Backup Cleanup Questions, Answered
Is sewage backup dangerous?
Yes. Raw sewage is Category 3 black water and can carry bacteria such as E. coli, viruses, and parasites. Skin contact, splashes, and contaminated air can all cause illness, so keep people and pets away until it's professionally cleaned.
Can I clean up sewage myself?
Small, contained spills on hard surfaces might be manageable with proper protection, but most backups involve porous materials and hidden contamination. Professional cleanup with PPE, containment, and registered disinfectants is the safer choice.
What causes sewage backups?
Roots, grease, flushed wipes, damaged pipe, and storm overload of city sewers cause most backups.
Does insurance cover sewage backup?
Often only with a sewer backup endorsement. Without that rider, many policies don't cover it, so check your coverage.
How can I prevent sewage from backing up again?
A camera inspection, regular line maintenance, and a backwater valve are the best defenses, along with keeping grease and wipes out of the drains.
